The first book, 'Crossfire' has a good sense of the Imperium as a tottering, bureaucratic, staggeringly vast system, allowing this to play out in a variety of ways (for instance, cultural differences). Farrer decently leavers the neglected elements of the setting (something he does in in his short stories also).

All whilst making it abundantly clear how unpleasant law enforcement is in the Imperium of Man. The catch-the-bad-guy plot isn't really inspired and doesn't do a lot to add to this, but one touch works well: each chapter starts with a page for that day from an in-universe religious almanac centred on the festive season of the plot. The texture of the various rituals is rather good, zooming out periodically from the guns-blazing end of things as well as escaping the inner monologue that would support that around it.

The second-hand omnibus edition I possess also has a few in-universe official documents, travel guides and the like appended: they do something similar but have a touch too much of pastiche about them. Matthew Farrer's introduction for the omnibus is probably indicative of having a good handle on his material.

Nonetheless, all quite good for what it is. The third book, 'Blind' sets things in one of the Imperium's telepathic telegram offices. Not something I can recall being done elsewhere, or in such a fashion.Solomon VKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11763252777153908412noreply@blogger.com
